The Truth about Natural Ulcer Remedies

Throughout the web, you can find a plethora of ulcer remedies from kinds of fruit to antacids.  Most of these homespun remedies involve additions to the ulcer sufferer’s diet.  Some also call for excluding things from one’s diet.  Much of what they claim is not altogether false, and as long as you don’t let this dubious advice keep you from seeing your physician, then you should be fine.

However, if you really have an ulcer, you are better off getting to the bottom of it as soon as possible rather taking some ineffective, unscientific remedy to your ulcer problem.

What is an ulcer?

The peptic ulcers that we are discussing here, are holes created in the stomach lining (the duodenum).  Scientists have recently found out that in many cases the cause of ulcers is a type of bacteria (H. pylori).  H. pylori is a spiral bacterium that can burrow into and puncture the duodenum.  What happens then, of course, is that the hole mixes digestive juices with the area outside of the stomach and that in turn creates a high risk of infection and further problems.

Typical Medical Treatment

Of the scientific ulcer remedies, the most effective has been destroying the cause of the ulcer at its root.  In other words, to help heal the ulcer, the physician will prescribe anti-biotics so that it can go to work on destroying H. pylori.  This will slow down and stop the further damaging of the duodenum.

Sometimes, the damage to the stomach wall is too severe, however, simply to treat H. pylori.  In these cases, a surgical procedure may become necessary.

Dietary Considerations

Many websites make the claim that eating your veggies can really make a difference when it comes to ulcers.  There has not been a lot of research suggesting this is the case.  However, a bland addition to your diet like a banana might be helpful to make your digestion a little bit easier.

As a rule of thumb, you want to keep in mind that the more digestive acids and juices that we come across, the more likely you are to experience stomach pain.  Furthermore, coffee is one of the culprits believed to cause an increase in the stomach of acids.  Therefore when treating the bacteria that are believed to cause ulcers, one of the central ulcer remedies has turned out to excluding unhealthy practices that increase digestive juices.

In some cases, in order to achieve a reduction in the amount of digestive juices, physicians will recommend a surgical procedure in which the nerve pathway that informs the brain of the need for more digestive juices is cut, making it so that such signals will not increase the flow of digestive juices.

Stress Reduction

Although many earlier notions about ulcers turned to be untrue, the jury is still out on whether stress can effect the progression of the ulcer.  Many medical researchers believe that stress has nothing to do with the appearance of ulcers.  Others, on the other hand, are convinced that we will still find a strong connection between ulcers and stress.  In one theory, for example, researchers argue that stress might increase the flow of digestive juices and thus help lead to ulcers.

Whether or not this is the case, living a nicer less, stress-filled life can be its own reward.  Taking up Yoga or meditation really can help reduce the amount of acidity in sufferer’s stomach and thus have an indirect effect on the growth of the ulcer.

Sometimes, however, there is no choice but to operate and close up the ulcer.  This is the less desirable of the choices but often it is necessary in order to save the sufferer from more serious complications.
